Along with another Berkeley alumnus, Stephen Hsu (M.A., Ph.D., physics, '89, '91), John Chun was one of three co-founders of SafeWeb. Based in Emeryville, California, SafeWeb was an instant media darling after claiming in press releases that its "patent-pending privacy technology" would allow customers to "surf the Web in complete privacy." It won a "Best of the Web" award from PC World and landed an investment from the CIA's venture capital arm, In-Q-Tel. John served as the company's president since its inception in March 2000. In January 2002 he was named chief executive officer. In October 2003, SafeWeb was acquired by Symantec Corporation John recieved his B.S. EECS '89, UC Berkeley and M.S. Biomedical Engineering '90, University of Texas.
